CGTN Features ROTOBOOST and China Baowu—the World’s Largest Steelmaker—on Industrial Decarbonization

ROTOBOOST and China Baowu, the world’s largest steelmaker, have been featured together in a new video published by China Global Television Network (CGTN), the international media network launched by China Central Television (CCTV) for global audiences.

The feature brings together ROTOBOOST’s CEO Kaisa Nikulainen and President of Baowu Clean Energy, Wei Wei where they discussed how Finnish clean-technology innovation and China’s industrial capabilities can accelerate the shift from technology development to deployment accelerating green transition.

Converting Methane into Clean Hydrogen and Valuable Carbon Materials

During the interview, Kaisa explains how ROTOBOOST’s proprietary methane-splitting technology converts methane into two valuable products: clean hydrogen and solid carbon materials.

By keeping the carbon in solid form instead of releasing it as CO₂ during the conversion process, the technology creates two potential value streams from the same feedstock. The clean hydrogen can support the decarbonization of energy-intensive industrial processes, while ROTOBOOST’s carbon materials have potential applications in steel, aluminium, batteries, tyres, protective coatings and other advanced-material products.

This combination is commercially important because it addresses both sides of the process: reducing the carbon intensity of hydrogen production while transforming the carbon into a material that can create additional industrial value.

The ROTOBOOST-Baowu Collaboration

ROTOBOOST and China Baowu Steel Group are working together to develop and demonstrate ROTOBOOST’s methane-splitting technology for green-steel applications under the Business Finland–China Ministry of Science and Technology Joint Innovation Programme. The collaboration brings ROTOBOOST’s methane-splitting technology together with Baowu’s industrial expertise, production environments and integration capabilities to validate the technology under real industrial requirements and progress toward commercial-scale deployment.

In the interview, Kaisa also emphasizes the importance of working with strong industrial partners capable of testing and demonstrating new technologies under real operating conditions. China Baowu’s scale, technical capabilities and extensive steelmaking operations provide an exceptionally important environment for this work.

Wei Wei describes the partners’ complementary roles: ROTOBOOST demonstrates the core technology, while Baowu Clean Energy supports the industrial pilot programme and plant-level integration.

The partners are also examining how both technology outputs can create value within and beyond steelmaking—using clean hydrogen to help reduce emissions from industrial production while developing applications for the solid carbon materials in steelmaking and other industries.

Why Finland–China Industrial Cooperation Matters

The CGTN feature examines how Finland’s strengths in clean technology, engineering and industrial innovation can be combined with China’s manufacturing capabilities, industrial scale and ability to deploy technologies in real operating environments. Being featured by CGTN gives the ROTOBOOST–Baowu collaboration significant visibility through one of China’s leading international media platforms. It also reflects growing recognition of a partnership that combines ROTOBOOST’s technology with the industrial expertise, operating environments and deployment capabilities of the world’s largest steel producer.

For ROTOBOOST, cooperation with China Baowu demonstrates the practical value of this combination. It creates a pathway through which technology can move from research and development into industrial validation, system integration and ultimately commercial deployment.

The interview also highlights that successful international cooperation requires more than complementary technology and industrial capabilities. It depends on clearly defined responsibilities, knowledge sharing, cultural understanding, long-term commitment and mutual trust.

Both Kaisa Nikulainen and Wei Wei emphasize the importance of working together toward a shared objective. Technology development and industrial deployment must progress together if new solutions are to achieve meaningful commercial and environmental impact.
